Devon Cornwall

I came to teaching through mentorship in the trades, where I experienced firsthand the impact that patient instruction and genuine belief can have on someone’s success. Helping an apprentice overcome obstacles and earn their Certificate of Qualification showed me the intrinsic value of teaching – not in personal achievement, but in witnessing the growth and confidence of another.

In my classroom, I strive to be approachable, fair, and engaged, taking time to connect with students as people while maintaining clear expectations. I believe failure is not something to be avoided, but a critical part of learning, especially in technological education, where mistakes are often material and revision is always possible. By prioritizing safety, experimentation, and reflection, I encourage students to problem-solve, try again, and build resilience. My goal is for students to leave my class with transferable skills – confidence, adaptability, and perseverance – and to remember their learning not just for what they built, but for the environment in which they were supported to succeed.

Above all, I hope students remember that their classroom was a place where they were challenged, supported, and treated with respect – and that learning was something they were invited into, not pushed through.

Teaching Philosophy

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is grounded in mentorship, experiential learning, and the belief that students grow best when they are trusted to do meaningful work, reflect on mistakes, and try again.

Background

I came to teaching through mentorship in the trades, where I saw how meaningful instruction can shape both confidence and direction.

  • Supporting apprentices through challenges toward certification
  • Recognizing the value of patience, encouragement, and guidance
  • Seeing growth happen through consistent, hands-on support
Practice

My classroom reflects real-world construction and technology environments through hands-on, project-based learning.

  • Clear expectations with a focus on safety and responsibility
  • Approachable, structured, and supportive learning environment
  • Space for students to try, make mistakes, and improve
Process

I believe the process matters just as much as the final product.

  • Failure is visible, fixable, and essential to learning
  • Students learn through experimentation and troubleshooting
  • Reflection helps students recognize growth and improvement
Outcomes

Students leave my classroom with more than technical skill.

  • Increased confidence in problem-solving
  • Resilience when facing challenges
  • Transferable skills that extend beyond the shop
Purpose

I aim to be the teacher I needed: structured, honest, and supportive.
