Sample Lesson

Electricity and Magnetism

To reinforce learning, students explore theory and application of the constant connection between Electricity and Magnetism - one cannot exist without the other being present. Through the building of a electromagnetic crane and the use of different sizes of battery, students explore how available electricity affects magnetic fields.

Assessment & Feedback

Assessment in my classroom is ongoing and largely observational, focusing on both the process and the final product. Feedback is given in the moment and I try and use the Hamburger Approach - Good, Needs Improvement, Great.

Professional Development

Certifications

Qualifications & Safety

My qualifications reflect both industry experience and a strong commitment to safe, practical instruction.

  • Red Seal Electrician (C of Q) Industry-standard trade certification
  • Working at Heights Reinforces safe practice in applied environments
  • WHMIS Supports safe material handling in shop and classroom settings

Learning In Practice

Applied in the Classroom

My strongest professional growth has come through applying new learning directly in the classroom.

  • Using real-time feedback during practical tasks
  • Adapting instruction based on student response and need
  • Reinforcing safety, reflection, and revision as part of daily learning

Workshops

Training & Development

Professional learning experiences have helped me strengthen both instructional practice and classroom management.

  • Ongoing Growth

    Continuous Development

I continue to grow as an educator through reflection, mentorship, and involvement beyond the classroom.

    • Coaching and mentorship experiences
    • Strengthening assessment and feedback strategies
    • Connecting trade experience to authentic student learning

    Experiences & Reflections

My development as an educator has been shaped through hands-on experiences, reflection, and continuous adjustment of my practice. The following examples highlight key moments where I was able to learn from real classroom situations and refine my approach to teaching and student support.

    Supporting a Student Through Challenge

Context: During my practicum, I worked with a student who was struggling to complete a hands-on project and was becoming disengaged.

What Happened: The student began to fall behind and showed frustration. I worked with them one-on-one to break the task into manageable steps and refocus their effort.

Reflection: I learned that disengagement is often tied to feeling overwhelmed. Providing structure and achievable steps helped rebuild confidence.

Takeaway: I now place greater emphasis on scaffolding tasks and checking in early to support student progress.

    Reinforcing Safety Expectations

Context: In a shop environment, maintaining safety while allowing independence is a constant balance.

What Happened: Students began rushing through a task and overlooking safety procedures. I paused the activity to address the issue directly.

Reflection: Safety cannot be assumed—it must be consistently reinforced and modeled.

Takeaway: I now proactively reinforce safety expectations and ensure students understand the reasoning behind procedures.

Using Failure as a Learning Tool

Context: Students were completing a build project where multiple attempts were required.

What Happened: Several students became frustrated when their initial designs did not work as expected.

Reflection: Failure is a critical part of learning. Reflection allowed students to improve their next attempts.

Takeaway: I now intentionally build time for iteration and reflection into all major projects.

    Building Classroom Relationships

Context: Establishing rapport with students is key to engagement and classroom culture.

What Happened: I focused on consistency, humour, and building connections with students.

Reflection: Students engage more when they feel respected and supported.

Takeaway: I prioritize relationship-building as a foundation for effective teaching and learning.
